iPhone 17 Pro Max: An Exit Interview
Industrial Design, Cosmic Orange, and the 4X Sweet Spot
The 2025 iPhone 17 Pro Max might just go down as my favorite iPhone in a long while. Beyond the vibrant new Cosmic Orange colorway, the overall redesign takes a much more industrial approach, and I am here for it.
Gone is the titanium frame from the iPhone 16 Pro Max; we're back to solid aluminum. The traditional "glass sandwich" design is mostly gone too, replaced by a smaller rounded-rectangle glass patch on the back. This gives the 17 Pro line a subtle two-tone look that is, in my opinion, awesome. The new aluminum construction also promises better durability and less risk of cracking the front or back glass.
Of course, in typical fashion, I still managed to drop and crack my front glass within the first month of ownership. Irony aside, since getting that replaced, the phone has taken plenty more drops with zero additional damage.
Beyond the new industrial look, there wasn't a massive gap between this and the 16 Pro line outside of the standard year-over-year bumps to the SoC, wireless performance, and color choices. Where you do notice the biggest hardware shifts is around the Iconic Camera Plateau.
Fixed Selfies & The 4X Sweet Spot
Apple focused its camera hardware upgrades on two specific lenses:
- New Square Front Camera: Real wide-angle front capture with a square sensor that crops to the optimal aspect ratio regardless of orientation.
- Tetraprism Telephoto Refresh: Optical zoom shifted to 4X with an effective 8X sensor crop.
- Integrated Vapor Chamber: Built-in liquid cooling for sustained performance under load.
The new front camera is a long-awaited upgrade to a selfie system that had remained largely unchanged since the iPhone 14 Pro. Having a square sensor means whether you hold the phone in portrait or landscape, it automatically crops to the best frame. It took Apple a few years to get here, but this feels like the exact right way to do it. This new camera also has Center Stage on video calls, panning smoothly to keep your face centered in the video stream.
On the back, Apple tweaked the Tetraprism telephoto lens, which reflects light internally to extend focal length. On the previous generation, the 5X optical zoom was often a bit too tight for everyday shots. Apple dialed it back to 4X, which turns out to be the absolute sweet spot for portrait and framing distance. They also added a sensor-crop 8X mode (working similarly to the 2X crop on the main Fusion sensor), giving you sharp 8X zoom without falling back on ugly digital magnification.
Vapor Chamber & Thermal Management
One of the most meaningful internal fixes addresses a longstanding flaw from the 16 Pro: thermal throttling. Apple added an internal copper vapor chamber containing a minute drop of water that transfers heat away from core chips much more effectively than dissipating through the frame alone.
This keeps the phone running significantly cooler during heavy workloads, maintaining high performance without thermal stutter. Apple even created a slick animated depiction of the vapor process during their keynote.
The Verdict
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has easily become my favorite iPhone ever, even if that isn't saying much, considering every generation builds on the last. But this release got so many details right, including what might be the best color Apple has ever shipped.
The recently announced iPhone 18 Pro Max iterates on this exact foundation, I have high hopes it will keep the streak going.
